What is the Secretary of State?

The Secretary of State:

Is Indiana’s chief elections officer. As such, the Secretary of State participates in voter outreach projects to increase voter participation, and supervises the electoral process.  The Secretary serves with the state’s bipartisan Elections Division, made up of equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans, to oversee candidates’ declaration process, certify elections results, and maintain campaign finance reports.  The Secretary also serves as the chairperson of the Indiana Recount Commission.

Incorporates new businesses. In addition, the Secretary of State oversees notaries public, the filing of commercial liens, and issues trademarks.

Regulates Indiana’s securities industry. In this capacity, the Secretary of State enforces Indiana’s securities laws, bringing action against persons and businesses which violate such laws, thereby working to protect Hoosiers from fraud.

Regulates the registration of motorized vehicle dealers.
